Commissioned by Thomas M. Galey (b. ca. 1884), an oil man interested in Indians who sometimes assisted anthropologist George Bird Grinnell (1849-1938) during his fieldwork; kept by Indian trader August C. Stohr (1868-1944) at Lame Deer, Montana, until 1932 when it was donated to MAI by Thomas Galey and August Stohr.
