Presented to Sitting Bull the Minor (Sitting Bull the Good, Oglala Lakota, 1841-1876) on June 6, 1875 by President Ulysses S. Grant; collected by General Nelson A. Miles (1839-1925, U.S. Army, then a colonel) following Sitting Bull's death at the hands of the Crows on December 16, 1876 on the Tongue River in Montana; inherited by General Miles' children, Cecelia Miles Reber (Mrs. Samuel K. Reber, 1869-1952) and Major Sherman Miles (1882-1966); donated to MAI in 1925.
